About the Chamber of Trade and Commerce

Skipton Chamber of Trade & Commerce was founded in 1897. Its aims are as follows:

  • To provide a platform for members to air their views

  • To provide a united voice on local issues

  • To promote the trading appeal of Skipton

  • To encourage inter-business trading

  • To give business advice to members

  • To organise regular social activities

We meet on a monthly basis to discuss local issues that members have raised. Our members are spread throughout the business community, and our views are often expressed to local authorities, national bodies and our M.P. We also have close links with the local press, radio station and the local police. The Chamber is a member of the Skipton Events Group which arranges and co-ordinates festivals in Skipton. We also organise various social events to encourage members to get to know each other on an informal basis.

In the recent past, we have voiced the traders' objections to Sunday Market Trading, and our Traffic Management sub-committee is in discussions with Craven District Council to find ways to improve congestion and parking facilities in the town.

During 2008/09 the Chamber successfully led the business community to achieve a yes vote for a 'Skipton BID' (Business Improvement District). Businesses in the BID area will pay a 1% levy on their business rate bill. This levy is providing funding of over £100,000 each year for five years to provide improvements to the town centre, the marketing and appearance of Skipton, and other projects.

For more information go to www.skiptonbid.co.uk

We have members on The Skipton Renaissance Town Team, The Craven Area Committee, One Planet Living and other organisations that are interested in improving the area. We also have close links with the Tourist Information Centre, Skipton Town Council and Craven District Council.
