Skipton
is a country market town at the southern end of the Yorkshire Dales. It has history,
a castle, cobbled streets, a market, and canal boats.
Skipton is a hub for the smaller Dales villages. The town was granted market rights
by King John in 1204. Nowadays the market is on the High Street four days a week (Mon,
Wed, Fri, Sat).
For cattle or sheep there is the new Skipton Auction Mart. The Medieval Festival
takes place on first two Sundays in December. Many of the town's attractions are linked
by the Millennium Walk route.
A short stroll along the Springs Branch canal runs beneath the castle ramparts into
Skipton Woods and back via Chapel Hill.
The Castle dates from the 11th century, and was involved in the Wars of the Roses
and as a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War. One of the best preserved castles
in the country, it is open to the public daily.
No visit to Skipton is complete without a visit to the Leeds to Liverpool canal.
You can join a trip along the canal, or why not click the canal boat to the left to
hire your own Pennine Cruiser for the day or the week. |
